Four Oktoberfests, Two Weekends: How to Do NKY’s Fall Right

There is a stretch of September in Northern Kentucky when four Oktoberfest experiences arrive within a few miles of one another. Covington and Newport open on the same Friday. Hofbräuhaus Newport carries the celebration through September programming. The following weekend, Oktoberfest Zinzinnati fills the riverfront across the bridge.

The tradition began in Munich in 1810 as a public celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. Here, the season also fits a river region visibly shaped by German immigrant communities, breweries, neighborhood institutions, and foods that remained part of local life.

Covington Oktoberfest: September 11–13. This is the neighborhood festival, centered on Goebel Park and expanding onto Sixth and Main Streets. Admission is free. Hours are Friday noon–11 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.–11 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Its MainStrasse setting makes it the easiest celebration to pair with a walk through the surrounding neighborhood.

Newport Oktoberfest: September 11–13. Newport Festival Park adds a riverfront setting, two stages of entertainment, food vendors, contests, and a carnival. Admission is free. Hofbräuhaus Newport: September programming. The annual celebration brings Oktoberfest bier, Bavarian food, live entertainment, ceremonial keg tappings, and stein-hoisting activities to the Newport bier hall and biergarten. Oktoberfest Zinzinnati: September 17–20. The Cincinnati Regional Chamber’s free festival returns to Sawyer Point and Yeatman’s Cove. Hours are Thursday 4–10 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–11 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m.–7 p.m. The 2026 event schedule includes the World’s Largest Chicken Dance and Running of the Wieners.

The easiest two-weekend plan is to split the first weekend between Covington and Newport, then reserve a longer block the following weekend for Zinzinnati. Hofbräuhaus works as a flexible stop between the larger outdoor festivals. Families may prefer Newport in daylight, while Covington is especially easy to combine with MainStrasse.

If you only have one day, start in Covington and move to Newport later. The two festival grounds are about three miles apart, but parking and street closures can make the transfer slower than it looks. Build in time, and check each organizer’s live information before leaving home.
