What's a dirty soda? That sounds icky. But it's not.

The name does the drink no favors.

Dirty soda is not soda that sat in a cup too long. It is not muddy. It is not alcoholic. It is a regular fountain drink with extra stuff mixed in: flavored syrup, fruit puree, a splash of cream, sometimes a squeeze of lime.

The classic version is Diet Coke or Dr Pepper over ice, coconut syrup, lime, and a little cream. Stir. The cream swirls through the bubbles. That is the whole trick. “Dirty” just means you added something to a clean soda.

It started in Utah soda shops. Swig is the chain people point to. Louisville got one. Lexington has Fizzy Fox. Northern Kentucky does not have a dedicated dirty soda shop. You can still get the idea here. You just have to know which places mix drinks that way.

Start with the small places

Schneider's Sweet Shop, Bellevue

420 Fairfield Avenue.

The old-school version. Candy and ice cream since 1939, with a soda fountain that still does floats, old-fashioned sodas, shakes, and ice balls in summer. If dirty soda is soda dressed up for TikTok, Schneider's is soda dressed up the way a fountain shop has always done it.

Piper's Soft Serve Bar, Covington

503 West Sixth Street.

Soft serve first. They also serve craft sodas, teas, and lemonades. A cream soda here is in the same neighborhood as a dirty soda, even if nobody writes “dirty” on the cup.

Knowledge at Hotel Covington, Covington

638 Madison Avenue.

Zero-proof drinks built like cocktails. Past menus have included Magnolia (grapefruit, rosemary, seltzer) and Behave Yourself (lime, coconut, pomegranate, vanilla, cream). That second one is cream and citrus in a fizzy glass. No alcohol.

Healthy Hangout, Florence

7220 Burlington Pike.

Not a soda shop. It is a small local spot that mixes loaded teas, slushies, and named specialty drinks. If you want a non-coffee treat that is built to order, this is closer than another latte.

Then the easy chain stop

7 Brew, Newport and Florence

Yes, 7 Brew. It is a coffee stand, but skipping it would be a miss. They serve 7 Fizz, a caffeine-free soda you can flavor with syrups and finish with cream, whipped cream, or cold foam. Named combos include Pink Mermaid, Peaches N’ Cream, and Brew Lagoon. Ask for a Fizz with cream if you want it closer to a dirty soda.

What we are not listing as a dirty soda shop

Most NKY coffee shops stay coffee shops. Roebling Books, Velocity Bike & Bean, The Black Goose, The Cauldron Cafe, and KIT Coffee make flavored lattes and teas, not soda plus cream. Milk Jar in Crestview Hills uses “dirty” for brown-sugar milk tea. Swig is Louisville and Jeffersonville. Fizzy Fox is Lexington.

The short version

Dirty soda sounds like a mess. It is just soda with extras.

Northern Kentucky does not have a dedicated shop for it. What you can get locally is a Bellevue soda fountain, Covington craft sodas, a hotel bar that will make a zero-proof drink with cream and citrus, and mixed specialty drinks at Healthy Hangout. If you just want the flavored fizzy cup on the way home, 7 Brew will make a Fizz.

You do not have to like the name. You just have to be willing to put cream in a Coke once.
