A Guide to Northern Kentucky Farmers Markets & Stands

Northern Kentucky's farmers market scene is one of the most consistent parts of the local food calendar. Between the three river counties there's a market open almost every day of the week from late spring through October, and a handful run year-round in some form.

The Covington Farmers Market is the region's anchor. Run by the nonprofit Center for Great Neighborhoods, it sets up every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May through October, along Washington Street between West 6th and West Pike (next to Mother of God Church). Expect a full lineup: produce from small Kentucky farms, pasture-raised meat and eggs, honey, cut flowers, breads and pastries, and a rotating set of artisan vendors. It runs rain or shine.

In Boone County, the Boone County Farmers Market is closely tied to the Boone County Extension Office and operates seasonally out of Burlington. It's smaller than Covington but a good match for anyone in the Union, Florence, or Burlington area who wants a shorter drive and less crowd. The Extension Office publishes the vendor list and dates each spring.

Beyond the organized markets, roadside farm stands are worth knowing about. Along Route 18 in western Boone County, along Highway 8 through Campbell County, and on the back roads south of Independence, you'll find seasonal stands selling sweet corn, tomatoes, pumpkins in the fall, and mums. Most run on the honor system or cash; bring small bills.

A few practical notes: most Kentucky markets accept SNAP/EBT and many participate in the Kentucky Double Dollars program that matches SNAP spending on fresh produce. Bring your own bags, arrive in the first hour if you want the best pick of tomatoes and eggs, and don't be shy about asking growers what's actually in season that week, that's the whole point.
